I am Programme Leader on the BA (Hons) Creative Writing course of the Open College of the Arts. In addition I am a Degree Programme Director for multimedia journalism at Newcastle University.
I have extensive experience in teaching creative writing and journalism at Northumbria University, Leeds Beckett University and the University for the Creative Arts.
I can teach general creative writing skills or more niche courses tailored to your needs. My specialisms include crime/suspense fiction, historical fiction, writing for children, writing fantasy and creative non-fiction.
For example, successful courses I recently designed and delivered included Writing Historical Fiction for the Hexham Book Festival, Writing Crime Fiction for Newcastle University and Writing Your Family History for Woodhorn Museum, as well as First Steps in Creative Writing for the Bailiffgate Museum, Alnwick and Berwick Community Centre.
I am experienced in working with groups of children and young people. I have recently been accepted to The Brilliant Club programme to run sessions with pupils to increase the number of pupils from underrepresented backgrounds progressing to selective universities.
I can teach adults how to write more creatively in business, blog and effectively use social media. Though I am normally available for creative writing mentoring and courses by arrangement - contact me via this site.
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and am trained as a 21st Century Author by the National Literacy Trust.
My sessions always receive outstanding feedback. Check out some of these testimonials here.
